The Significance Of Physical Agent Modality Certification

By Christa Jarvis

Physical agent modalities or PAMs have been an important component of therapy services for several years. Traditionally, they are involved in electrical stimulation, ultrasound, shortwave diathermy and light therapy. They work by transferring low, medium and high frequency of energies into the tissues for the proper stimulation that are possible with manual therapy techniques.

These are also used by many physical therapists as a great technique for the preparation of rehabilitation. Once they are being used during and after a therapy session, most of the modalities also help to enhance every effect of the treatment. It helps to decrease the movement, reduce muscle pains and spasms as well as stiffness. These techniques should be administered by therapists who undergone proper training. Thus, it is essential for everyone to gain physical agent modality certification to become qualified.

Heat is a common modality in use of ultrasound. It is a kind of method using a high frequency sound waves and a level of conversion of the energy to heat. Actually, a sound wave is applied to the skin. A Gel substance is also applied to enhance more the transmission of a sound to the tissues. Since, it has the ability in heating a deeper tissue, ultrasound is perfect in treating scar tissue, joint pains and muscle spasms.

Another way of treatment is the use of electrotherapy. This can be done by using the electrical currents and treat different types of diseases. The currents are usually placed on the surface of the body that connects to the external circuits. The electrodes are also placed in the tissues. The stimulation can be done via pacemakers and greatly controls the heart beat.

Apart from that, it also help to improve the muscles, diaphragm and urinary bladde functions. Most of the electrodes help to relieve pains once they are implanted to the spinal canal. The body surface may also avoid any muscle wither and give a temporary relief after the surgery.

The TENS or the transcutaneous electrical stimulation is also an electrical modality that great control the pain. TENS provide a rapid electrical stimulation and properly guided to a peripheral nerve through the electrodes. It is used at a low frequency setting and causes a release of the opiates that reduce the pain. It can be applied for chronic or acute pain.

It is also helpful in many post surgical cases where an early movement needs and after fractures. It is also useful to treat people who have suffered severe pain. Furthermore, neuromuscular electrical stimulation also provides a nonstop current to maximize the range of motion, strengthen the muscles and may facilitate every muscle to contract.

The currents are applied through the electrodes and delivered to the muscles to produce contractions. The current can possibly be interrupted to allow the muscle to relax. These are well controlled by the physical therapists. Most of these modalities are also administered by trained professionals.

Overall, in order to perform the therapy properly, it is important for a therapist to undergo such training session in order to obtain certification. This is also an indication that you are capable to handle the task and perform it successfully.
