Great Sites For Hunting For Alligators

By Mark Bell

The southern states of the US have for decades been known to host vast populations of gators. Each year, licensed hunters from the rest of the country converge at different public and privately owned marshes to hunt them for a variety of reasons. The spots below are great if you intend to go hunting for alligators.

First off is the state of Louisiana. Many hunters consider it a Mecca for gator hunting owing to its abundance of swamps. Many swamps in the state are fed by the drainage basin of the Atchafalaya River. Its drainage basin has for long been the largest in the US.

Up to 30 percent of the basin consists of marshland, with the remaining 70 percent being forested. The marshes provide a lot of food for fish, hence favoring a booming fish population. In turn, the fish provide food for the gators, meaning hunters in the area stand a greater chance of bagging huge gators as compared to other locations in the country.

Many hunters also regard Florida as a good location. The St. Johns Marsh sits perfectly at the southern end of the majestic St. Johns River. Hunters are always guaranteed a decent catch any day due to the heavy presence of alligators in the marsh. In terms of volume, no other river in Florida beats the St. Johns. The local licensing authority issues as many as 500 annual hunting licenses for the river, a factor that draws many seasoned hunters every year.

Victoria County in Texas is another noteworthy location. The county lies on the Texas coastline, southeast of the city. Over the years, it has recorded some of the largest trophy catches in the entire state.

Each passing month, the local authorities respond to as many as 500 distress calls from homeowners. The gator species found here are pretty bold and therefore venture into public pools and homes on a regular basis. For inexperienced hunters, catching them is always challenging.

Another perfect location is the Bayou Pierre River. It courses its way East off the mighty Mississippi. The whole region surrounding the two rivers has been home to huge aggressive gators for decades. The biggest male gator to have ever been captured in public waters was caught in the Pierre River. Upon measurement, it weighed 686 pounds and measured 14 feet.

Alabama is another state that has its fair share of gators. While many know Lake Eufaula as a great duck hunting site, it is also a known alligator habitat. Not many years ago, local news stations were awash with a story of a large gator that bit right through the side of a hunting boat. While the beast was eventually caught, it certainly brought the river to the limelight.

As much as your upcoming hunt may sound exciting, you should strive to abide by the rules of the local jurisdiction. Licensing is a key part of this. Without a license, you may end up paying a fine or serving jail time. Also remember some habitats are protected, so stick to areas that you have researched on.
